A suburban community in the famous Orange County, California, the city of Costa Mesa is home to around 120,000. The community is located just minutes from some of California’s most beautiful beaches, and thus it is home to some high-priced residential real estate. The Costa Mesa real estate market has seen drops from its pre-crash highs as residents were affected by the downturn in the American economy. The number of foreclosures has risen in the recent two years in the community and many homeowners have found themselves owing more on their homes than they are now worth.

Despite a rough two years, the market has recently shown potential signs of stabilization and improvement. Monthly statistics from February showed one of Costa Mesa’s Zip codes seeing an improvement in price, while the other saw prices take a dip, according to DataQuick Information Systems. The Zip code with a rise saw a median monthly price of $565,000, a 15.3% rise year-over-year. The other area saw a median price of $461,750, an 8.6% drop from a year earlier. Sales activity was up in the first Zip code 37.5% to 22 homes sold in February, while activity remained flat year-over-year in the second, with sales volume of 27.

More recent statistics of Orange County real estate prices show an increase in activity in March. Costa Mesa saw 32 and 36 sales in each of its Zip codes for the month. The 36 sales marked a 24% improvement year-over-year, while the 32 accounted for nearly the opposite, a 22% yearly decrease. Prices in both areas of Costa Mesa saw yearly improvements. One area saw a median price of $515,00, a 12% rise, while the other saw a median of $467,500, a 24.7% rise.

Foreclosures in Costa Mesa showed signs of slowing near the end of 2009, a positive sign for those with Costa Mesa homes for sale, as fewer foreclosures will likely lead to an increase in prices if there are fewer rock-bottom-priced foreclosure homes in the mix. According to the Orange County Register’s real estate blog, in the fourth quarter of 2009, there were 23 foreclosures in Costa Mesa, down from 29 in the third quarter of 2009 and down from 27 in 2008’s fourth quarter.

A beautiful oceanside community on the Makena Bay on Maui’s southwestern side, Makena, Hawaii, lies nestled among several top-tier golf courses. The Makena real estate market showed positive signs near the end of 2009.

In the month of December, the region saw a median single-family home price of $1.7 million, up from $935,000 in November. In December 2008, there were actually no sales in the area from which to draw statistics. The total dollar sales volume in the area was $6.37 million, with four homes sold in December. One year ago, there was only one home sold, at a price tag of $935,000. This area had the highest median price of homes for sale on Maui in December.

The Makena real estate market saw a continual increase in volume but a dip in prices. There were 10 condos sold in December for a median price of $770,000. In November, there were nine sales with a median price of $1.32 million and one year ago there were just eight condo sales, but the median price was a higher $1.82 million. The Makena area condo market had the third-highest median condo price on Maui during December.

For all of 2009, there were 18 single-family Makena homes for sale sold, a decrease of 28% from 2008, when there were 25 sales. The yearly median sales prices of single-family homes for 2009 was $1.53 million, down 34% from a year ago when it was $2.3 million. Condo sales showed a similar trend: There were 71 sales of condos in the region in 2009, a dip of a hefty 60% from 2008’s sales volume, when there were 179 condos sold. The yearly median sales price was $1.32 million, down 40% from a year ago.

Cupertino, California, famous for being the world headquarters to the international computer brand Apple Computers, is a high-priced real estate market home to some of Silicon Valley’s priciest neighborhoods. After the onset of the financial crisis in 2008, the market saw its sales volume and prices plummet before beginning a roller coaster journey of ups and downs.

Most recently, the Cupertino real estate market has shown some signs of improvement, perhaps offering cautious optimism for those invested in or looking to invest in the market. In February this year, the median price of a home sold in the city was $1.097 million, down slightly from January’s $1.18 million but up substantially from the median price one year ago in 2009, when it was just $930,000, according to local realtor Cherie Colon. Average prices have shown progress likewise: In February, the average was around $1.08 million, up from around $989,000 one year ago.

In February, however, Cupertino homes for sale spent an average of 47 days on the market. This was down slightly from January’s average of 49, but it was also up by 28% from a year ago, when the average was just slightly over one month, at 36 days. Sales in Cupertino are also now meeting or exceeding listing prices, with the sales vs. listing price in February at 100.7%, up from 98.3% in January and 96% one year ago.

There were 38 properties pending sale in February, up 81% from January’s 21 and up more than 111% from a year ago, when there were only 11 properties pending. The market has also seen inventory dwindle. In February, there were just 46 active homes listed, versus 99 a year ago, a drop of more than 53%. That figure did, however, rise slightly from January of this year, when it was down to just 38 homes on the market. Sales volume has remained steadily constant over the year: In February, there were 12 homes sold, versus 13 in January and 11 in February 2009.

Living on or near Lido Island

The manmade island of Lido Isle is located in Newport Beach, California and was created in 1906 as part sandbar and part mudflat. Today, the area has gone through multiple construction phases and development and is now home to more than 1,800 people. As one of the best pieces of Newport Beach real estate, Lido Isle was one of the first master-planned communities in California and resembles traditional Mediterranean resorts. The European theme was continued in the naming of several local streets, including Barcelona, Genoa, Nice, and Ithaca. French influences can be seen at Via Lido Nord and Via Lido Soud, two of Lido Isle’s main thoroughfares.

Home to several contemporary and modern homes as well as some Mediterranean-esque properties, Lido Isle is a beautiful place to live and play. The semi-private community enjoys a number of community clubs, a yacht club, and some spectacular stretches of beach. All residents must be a part of the Community Association which ensures strict standards are adhered to. The annual Newport Christmas Boat Parade is one of Lido Isle’s biggest events. Living on the island is particularly comfortable for residents who enjoy beach living without being far from large centers of retail and commerce.

The Lido Isle Yacht Club

Being a man-made island located in the harbor of Newport Beach, California, Lido Isle is the perfect destination for numerous seaside establishments, one of which is the Lido Isle Yacht Club. The club was incorporated on September 29, 1928, but it didn’t become active until after the Depression years and World War II, when several parents in Lido decided to teach sailing to their children. The Lido Isle Yacht Club became a member of the Southern California Yachting Association in 1948, and in 1965, the club was admitted to the Yacht Racing Union of Southern California.

Most of the activity in the club is dedicated to junior sailing, a program which is extremely successful and has led many youth on to national and international awards. In 1950, the Helms Foundation honored three junior club members for their outstanding skill in sailing. The club has also excelled in Lido-14 and Laser championships, as well as the CFJ championships. The 1993 Newport Harbor High School Sailing team, which was comprised primarily of Lido Isle Yacht Club members was ranked the number one high school sailing team in the nation. Aside from the clubs excellent junior program, the club’s adult teams have also won numerous sailing championships.

Although the Lido Isle Yacht Club is a excellent center for sailing lessons, the club also hosts evening BBQ’s throughout the summer, the “Commodore’s Beach Concert,” a silent auction, a junior carnival, and fishing tournaments for both adults and kids.

Why Sarah Palin is the Best Darn Comedy on TV Today – a Newport Beach Entertainment Attorney’s View

It really doesn’t matter if you are Republican, Democrat or Independent, whether you live or work in Hollywood, Los Angeles, or live in Malibu, or live and work outside the entertainment industry anywhere from Orange County to San Diego, from Carlsbad, or Pacific Beach, La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe and San Marcos to Newport Beach, Laguna Beach or Huntington Beach, Garden Grove, Anaheim, Irvine or Yorba Linda. Even if you live in Montecito or Santa Barbara, Temecula, Palm Desert, La Quinta or Palm Springs, you have got to love Sarah Palin for the comedy she has brought back to television and to this election.

Before I even start this article, there will be some out there who will say Sarah Palin is being picked on. Whether or not you believe that to be true or false, this candidate is giving us some of the best comedy a politician has ever given us, and at a time when we have never needed it more. Saturday Night Live could never have hoped for a better candidate to skewer.

Who knew that the straight man or in this case straight woman would turn out to be Katie Couric?

First there was Sarah Palin’s attempt to explain her position that by the fact that Alaska is geographically close to Russia, that she has foreign policy experience. Couric asked why Palin’s experience in Alaska enhances her foreign policy credentials.

Palin: Well, it certainly does because our next door neighbors are foreign countries, there in the state that I am the executive of. And there in Russia -

Couric: Have you ever been involved in any negotiations for example, with the Russians?

Palin: We have trade missions back and forth. We do – it’s very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia – as Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America, where do they go? It’s Alaska. It’s right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there, they are right next to our State.

Has anyone yet figured out what any of her answer to Katie Couric’s question means? One has to believe she was testing her skill as a deadpan comedian because she followed up this answer with an even better answer.

Couric: Why isn’t it better, Governor Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families who are struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries; allow them to spend more and put more money into the economy instead of helping those big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?

Palin: That’s why I say I, like every American I’m speaking with, we’re ill about this position that we have been put in where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy, helping the – it’s got to be all about job creation, too, shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track. So health care reform and reducing taxes, and reigning in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americans. And trade, we’ve got to see trade, as opportunity not as competitive, scary thing. But one in five jobs being created in the trade sector today, we’ve got to look at that as more opportunity. All those things under the umbrella of job creation. The bailout is a part of that.

Political science majors in college and election campaign advisors will be studying both of these answer for years. But just grasp if you will how, in her second answer,she is able to connect the dots. The bailout, Palin says, makes her and other Americans ill. So the bailout needs to bail out health care, presumably, so we can get over our illness with the bailout. This is masterful.

But the bailout is also about job creation (whose?), reducing taxes (really?), reigning in spending (all $700 billion worth?), and trade (this is part of her comedy routine apparently). And then in the spirit of Halloween which is just around the corner, she says trade should be seen as an opportunity, not just as a scary thing. Brilliant. But she forgot to mention Christmas and being a maverick cleaning up Washington. Rats.

As an entertainment attorney who also handles election law, campaign finance law and political law, Sarah Palin has it all. She is rejuvenating comedy to it’s highest art form and making political junkies of us all.

This isn’t just comedy or entertainment. This is politics at it’s most lucid. Or is that ludicrous?

City of Newport Beach Guards Against Pest Birds

The city of Newport Beach Fire Department has approved installation of plastic bird spikes on the main lifeguard station in Newport Beach California. Eric Bauer, Lifeguard Battalion Chief says “we have been fighting pigeons and seagulls for years on the lifeguard station. The **** was just pilling up on the roofs and access areas. Each night the dew would set in and drag all of the bird ***** on to the roof access creating a horrendous smell and a certain health hazard.” They had tried sonic devices and motion controlled sprinkler systems in the past to try to get rid of the birds, but to no avail. Bauer then contacted John Rabun of J.M. Rabun Company to help him come up with a solution.

Rabun suggested using a product from Bird-B-Gone, Inc., to keep the birds from landing on the roof area. Bird-B-Gone, Inc. is the largest manufacturer and distributor of pest bird deterrents in North America. Jeff Watts from Bird-B-Gone met Rabun at the lifeguard station to help suggest a bird control system that would work. Watts says, “they have a large infestation of pigeons and seagulls on the roof area, the best solution is some sort of physical deterrent that keeps the birds from landing and roosting on the roof. I suggested using the Bird Spikes on the roof peaks and edges. This will make it difficult for the birds to land and they will choose another more suitable area.” Battalion Chief Bauer chose to us the Plastic Bird Spikes from Bird-B-Gone, Inc.. The plastic spikes are made of a sturdy polycarbonate plastic, they are durable and virtually invisible when installed. The plastic spikes carry a 5-year Guarantee and are the lowest cost bird spike available.

Rabun says “the installation of the Bird Spikes was very easy to do. In no time we had most of the roof done!” He used adhesive to adhere the spikes to the roof peaks and edges of the roof. They used the clear plastic spikes on the roof as it is virtually invisible from a distance, and they used the white spikes on the parapet wall that surrounds the roof access as the white spike matches the white paint.

Along with the Bird Spikes Rabun is installing the Bird Spiders by Bird-B-Gone, Inc.. The Bird Spiders have eight stainless steel “arms” that move with the breeze discouraging birds from landing. They are installing the Bird Spiders on the open areas of the roof to keep Gulls from landing there. Jeff Watts of Bird-B-Gone, Inc. says “ this is what we call an integrated bird control solution. Sometimes more than on method or product is needed to keep pest birds away.”

Chief Bauer says, “ we are pleased to finally be rid of the countless pigeons and seagulls from our main life guard facility in Newport Beach. The building is a big part of the charm of he Newport Beach Pier and surrounding area, it just has much better “eye” appeal without all of the birds and their ****!”

The restaurant is kid friendly and a setting that can be enjoyed by everyone so take the kids along for a family dinning experience to remember, or if you really want to live leave the kids with a babysitter and have a night of fun out on the town including dinner at Chimayo Grill.
